Mayan Mam Covid-19 Vaccine Outreach

In this video, we provide important information for the Maya Mam community in Oakland/East Bay on how and why to obtain the COVID-19 vaccine. The video describes the process of how to make an appointment at the La Clinica de la Raza vaccine site and provides reassurance around linguistic, literacy, and immigration concerns. We also address medical concerns and myths about the vaccine. Finally, we advise people on what they can do once they are fully vaccinated. Our goal is to encourage members of this very hard-hit community to confidently and eagerly seek vaccination.

Living in Silence

While other UC Santa Cruz seniors are anxious to find a job after graduation, Antonio’s* biggest concern is being able to live in the only home he has ever known — the U.S. He is one of 800,000 undocumented residents whose future in the next five months will be determined by the Trump administration. He recalls the 7.6 earthquake and mudslide that hit La Libertad in 2001, killing over 800 people, destroying homes and changing his life forever. He was forced to relocate to America when the government didn’t provide jobs and eventually became a UC Santa Cruz food service worker. That was 16 years ago. “Like everyone, I was following the American

Equalizing Education in Anxious Times

When Sandra Gutierrez first came to UC Santa Cruz, the college experience overwhelmed her. She felt she was not as prepared as her peers because she couldn’t afford to attend private school or take AP classes. College was the first time Gutierrez was completely responsible for keeping track of all her responsibilities and she found it difficult to manage her time as a proposed human biology major. “I was raised by my mom and she was the one who would tell me to study [in allocated times],” Gut
